Lead Exposure in Childhood Still a Threat in the Americas – PAHO/WHO

Lead Poisoning: A Silent Threat to Children’s Health

During International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) calls for stronger efforts to detect and prevent lead poisoning, which affects up to 815 million children worldwide.

Understanding the Risks

In Latin America and the Caribbean, children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure from sources such as mining and industrial activities, lead-containing paints, and contaminated dust. Despite these risks, information on lead exposure remains limited, making prevention more challenging.

Taking Action

PAHO emphasizes the importance of identifying sources of exposure to protect children’s health. Through virtual seminars and collaborative efforts, PAHO and its partners are working to strengthen surveillance, implement prevention measures, and track progress towards a lead-free future.
